Marketed as a creative reimagining of a forgotten building, Fathom is adapting the Centennial Building from vacant offices to vibrant living spaces. Rooted in sustainability and Halifax’s urban history, the Agency Art Lofts respond to the prioritization of mixed-use urbanism and housing projects on the peninsula. Behind the industrial façade of the original 1960’s construction lies the untapped potential of exposed concrete columns, 11 foot ceilings, and waterfront views. Working with Sidewalk RED who acquired the building at 30% vacancy, the Agency Art Lofts are an exercise in the adaptive reuse of landmark buildings to serve city residents.

Adapting the original economic optimism of the 1950s when the Centennial Building was built, Fathom’s retrofit promotes sustainable development practices, vibrant communities, and a revitalization of modernism through architecture, interior design, and branding. The Agency Art Lofts reclaims the aesthetics of the era that it was built. Reworking this historic building required an eye to universal accessibility and a renewal of a fine grain urban fabric that creates vibrant streets.

As commercial building vacancy rates continue to rise in Halifax, this project revitalizes outdated interior spaces with mixed-use loft apartments. Nearly 40% of the residences will be subsidized affordable housing units for young residents without vehicles who can walk to their workplaces downtown.
