About Us
For nearly 25 years, Fathom Studio has offered innovative placemaking and community building solutions — the results of deep collaboration between multiple disciplines and clients that focus on the connections between people and place.
Our name reflects a number of connections to our work and ethos. It is uniquely maritime and signifies the depth of services and knowledge we bring to every project. The name also reflects the commitment to understanding a difficult problem after much collective discussion and thought, which is the hallmark of the team’s approach. As many measurement systems from the past were originally derived from a human scale measurement, the fathom was based on the distance from fingertip to fingertip on outstretched arms. This provides another connection to our teams’ advocacy for a return to human-scale dimensions, or simply the reconnection of design to the people that inhabit them.
Major clients throughout the Atlantic provinces, across Canada, and abroad have commissioned Fathom to solve complex problems while providing expert
service. The fully integrated nature of the practice means architects work side by side with landscape architects, artists, urban planners, engineers, interpretive designers, archaeologists, writers, researchers, and graphic designers, to shape space, tell stories, and foster community identity in the built environment. Our distinction lies in a sincere belief in the power of interdisciplinary, emphasizing the benefits of the collective intelligence of many brains, hearts, and methods of practice.
Fathom collaborates at all scales, from sign designs and museum exhibits to large buildings, downtown streetscapes, parks, waterfronts, and university campuses. Our passion is public space and creating meaningful built environments that inform, engage, and inspire.
