The Shubenacadie Canal Commission was established in 1986 by the Province of Nova Scotia. The objective of the commission was to oversee and promote the Shubenacadie Canal System including information and interpretive centres. Today, the volunteer organization of 15 members operates and maintains nine parcels of land, and two buildings under the umbrella of the Department of Natural Resources.
