What does non-billable mean?

Non-billable (NB) is a term we use to describe time spent on work that we will not be reimbursed for. These include:

  • Proposals: For proposal writing, binding, or related tasks. Please add a new proposal as a project in GroupThinq (make sure project status is set to ‘proposal’) and track your time to that proposal in your timesheets. Proposal wins and losses are tracked in GroupThinq as well as time spent on proposals.

  • NB—Professional Development/Education: For conferences, professional development, courses, or other approved activities. Also used when learning something new (like a webinar or reviewing an on-line tutorial.)

  • NB—Office Admin: For general office work such as clean-up, non-project specific filing, staff meetings or

other administrative duties.

Use of the comment field is especially important for non-billable tasks.

Billable projects can also be assigned non-billable time in GroupThinq timesheets but use this feature sparingly. Active projects are almost always billable. The exception is if you are part of a project team that wants to spend some extra time outside of office hours to bring a project in on budget or to make a project really shine. While we generally discourage this, it may be necessary from time to time. For paid projects, check with your supervisor first before logging time as non-billable.
