Ekistics Plan + Design and Form: Media win Halifax Urban Design Award
A park design commemorating the 100th anniversary of an explosion that devastated Halifax has won an Award for Excellence in Civic Design.
On May 4, 2018 the Halifax Regional Municipality presented awards for design excellence in five categories. Ekistics Plan + Design and Form: Media received the award for 'Design Excellence, Civic Design' for their work at Fort Needham Memorial Park.
Members of the Ekistics Plan + Design and Form: Media team accepted the Award on Friday evening during a ceremony at the Halifax Public Library.
The design for Fort Needham Memorial Park approaches the space as a living narrative for one of Halifax’s most transformative events by layering references to the Explosion into the elements and infrastructure that form the everyday park experience. Stories of the people and communities lost, the compassionate response, the resilience of the survivors, and the rebuilding efforts, are strategically inscribed in the landscape, enabling residents and visitors to honour the memory of the event in their own way; either consciously, or simply through their use and enjoyment of the park.
