The Lens: 2SLGBTQIA+ National Monument
The Lens: 2SLGBTQIA+ National Monument
Designed by Fathom Studio, MVRDV & Two Row Architects, “The Lens” is a monument dedicated to the queer community and particularly the survivors of the LGBT Purge, a discriminatory government campaign. The monument serves as a symbol of inclusivity, resilience, and pride, and is meant to honor those who speak out against injustice and celebrate their identity. The structure is designed to be both elegant and ethereal, with a pearlescent form that stands out in contrast to its parliamentary setting. The interior of the monument is meant to bring people together to share experiences, celebrate, and commemorate, creating a space for all to enter and feel welcomed. The surrounding landscape features interpretive installations that highlight the community’s history and resilience, guided by the seven grandparent teachings. The monument is situated between two seats of power, the Sacred Islands and the Parliament Buildings, and is meant to reclaim a valued place for the 2SLGBTQQIIA+ community in families, cultures, and communities.
