Lest we forget 

For small museums like the Army Museum Halifax Citadel, support from donors is the lifeblood that keeps short- and long-term goals met. While the Army Museum has maintained a high public profile—attracting much media attention since the launch of the first of many phases of exhibition refurbishment—it regularly requires help to meet goals.

For smaller museums, it is less about annual fundraising campaigns for large development funds, and more about making connections with corporations and individuals to help support special initiatives. Donors, for their contributions and support, are proud to see the impact of their funding in a visible way. With help from others comes gratitude, and finding ways to recognize donors for their contribution is an important aspect of museum life.

For the Army Museum, we created a series of donor recognition certificates to be given as gifts for those who have helped the museum mount a successful series of permanent exhibitions.

Honouring soldiers

During the two World Wars, soldiers wore wool badges to identify their division. The 5th Canadian Division of Atlantic Canada recently reinstated the patch, in part to recognize those who served—an apt metaphor for the Army Museum’s new visual identity. From the two-inch-by-three-inch proportion to the maroon colour, the symbol is recognizable for many who have or continue to serve. The ‘ribbon’ element of the Capital ‘M’ becomes an important graphic motif.

Proud military heritage

Nova Scotia has a proud military heritage dating back hundreds of years and that heritage is on display in a museum inside Halifax Citadel National Historic Site.

Staffed almost entirely by volunteers the Army Museum at the Halifax Citadel has been faithfully preserving and promoting Atlantic Canada’s military heritage since 1953. The collection itself is massive, numbering over 70,000 artifacts—a fraction of which is on display across several rooms. Walking through the museum is like walking through time; the story of our country’s proud military heritage evolving right before your eyes.

Fathom began working with the Army Museum in 2013. We’ve designed a number of exhibits, including powerful displays on the Boer War, the Northwest Rebellion and the First World War. Museum Curator, Ken Hynes, is pleased with the results. “The graphic design and installation done in the production of our First World War Centennial Exhibition has yielded world-class exhibit spaces, which has resulted in a significant increase in visitation.”

Over the next few years, several more exciting exhibits will be designed and mounted in the museum, telling the story of Canadians who performed the ultimate service and sacrifice for their country.
